Welcome to Ikhaya Lika Baba Ark (Read more)
Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Our Ark is located in Excelsior Primary School, Greenfern Road in Mobeni Heights, near Durban. The school is situated on the northern border of the Lamontville Township. Lamontville lies about 11 km south of Durban, and is home to about 30,000 people. The adult population is close to 50% women – mostly grandmothers and single mothers. Many people live in shacks.
96.8 % of the 640 children at Excelsior come from Lamontville. In 2006 Mrs Desiree Peters saw the great need to introduce Excelsior Primary School to Noah, as there were a lot of children who were orphans and some were living in extreme poverty. The children could not survive on the one cup of porridge and one slice of bread which was donated by a religious group.
By the end of 2006, the school’s then principal, Mr Reddy, the Governing Body and Eagle Christian Fellowship International (who had been feeding the children), received the news that their application was successful. A meeting was held to form a committee. Registration of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) started in March 2007 with 15 volunteers, and home visits were started.
